For the Gently Rebellious

Carbon Footprint Calculators

Have you checked yourself lately?

It's fun and easy to check your big fat carbon footprint these days. Deb Adams' latest blog I've Got A Footprint Like Godzilla has links to several of the online calculators that help us see just how much energy we use everyday. Have a look by clicking on Notes From Dry Creek Farm, over in the right sidebar.

Welcome, Fellow Contrarians

Welcome to The Quiet Contrarian, a rest stop of sorts for weary internet travelers.

Here I hope you'll find a little mental relief from all the unending crap that assaults each of us every day.

You get up in the morning, the sun is shining, you set off for a happy day at the job. Where the drama begins as you're dragged into co-workers' personal turmoils. Your best efforts in your work are entangled with strange workplace management tactics that bend your mind into a pretzel. Family and friends, beloved as they may be, call with things for you to do in your "extra" time. Then, at the end of the day, when you're able to steal a few minutes to catch the news, you're hit in the face with violence and insanity, from your neighborhood to halfway across the world.

Well. Let's put a stop to all that, shall we?

I don't mean stop going to work or stop spending time with those we love. I'm talking about reclaiming a little peace of mind for ourselves every single day. And while we're at it, we can share ideas on how to accomplish this with others who also want to crank everything down a few notches.

In doing so, we can hope our ideas of peace, kindness and simple living will go forth and multiply. I can see little flowers and butterflies spreading out over the landscape and transforming cracked barren wastelands already.

Peace and respect. These have become contrary notions, you know. Governments, churches, chemical and weapons manufacturers, movie and record companies, political parties gone mad - they all give lip service to some Higher Calling but conveniently feel themselves exempt from The Rules as they ruin the world. OUR world. These groups are powerful mass mind-controllers. They are not going to change their selfish destructive behaviours until strongly challenged.

What is a timid contrarian to do?

That is what we need to figure out. We need a Hobbit game plan. How we timid, we bookish can challenge the Dark Lords of our time who live to destroy what is good in society and beautiful in the world, all for personal gain.

Here I'll share views on such topics, along with reviews on books I love, music that moves me, people who inspire me, causes that can make a positive difference. It is as much for myself as for others. A bit more focus on what is good and wonderful in the world, less on the negative. All in a nice, quiet introverted way.

Ahem.

I should say that is my aim, but as one contrarian to another, certain issues related to the above Saruman-ia may require me to push the boundaries of calm discourse. In fact, I'd say groups like those mentioned all breed a number of individuals who would benefit from a good verbal Spanking.

It's true, such individuals are mostly likely incureable.

Ah, well, one does what one can.

In the sidebar to the right, directly under the horse, you'll see blogs by my role models. Deborah Adams and Julie Wray Herman, friends for many years, are experts on gardening, sustainable living and many other important related subjects. I know nothing about these things. I'm the city slicker. So I look forward to reading about their experiences and what has worked well for them in living green.

It's all in aid of creating a world where kindness and respect are shown by everyone to everyone, and where common sense will return to every country's leaders before they destroy the planet and all of us with it.

And with that, I wish you happy thoughts and a lovely evening.
